I've seen a lot of people post recently that 2016 was a terrible year for them. They include economic setbacks, family losses, political upheaval, career changes, down-sizing, dipping into savings. You might relate to those or have your own.
If you are one of the 1.8 billion Facebook users, you are familiar with the automated videos that Facebook adds to your social graph; social graph is commonly referred to as the news feed. I saw one this morning and thought it didn't reflect most people's 2016, so I made some adjustments.
My video included a photo my wife and I took of us in the car with our cats. We had been working toward purchasing a house from a friend but it became apparent that our irregular income from starting new businesses made the choice illogical, particularly when factoring in rapidly rising hydro costs. We had already had one cat stolen in that neighbourhood and we weren't going to chance it with the other two. Add hydro, downsizing, kijiji, scaling back. You have your own list.
Politically and economically, I can only see 2017 being better than 2016 if we use different approaches. Growing disparity, poverty, inequality will lead to the same things that it always does: starvation, violence, revolt. The regressive left battles the alt-right, neither showing much concern for anything or anyone else. Civilization can do a lot better.
